A memorial service will be held Saturday for former Daily News employee Al Bales of Van Nuys, who died July 29 of leukemia. He was 84.

``He told me once that if he could influence kids to read newspapers, maybe even have a few of them go on to careers in journalism someday, it would be the greatest legacy any newspaper man could have.''

Bales was a member of the American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  in Panorama City and editor of the organization's Castle News. He bowled twice a week at Mission Bowl in Mission Hills and was president of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Bowling Association in 2005.

Allan Thomas Bales was born Feb. 8, 1922, in Monrovia, and he graduated in 1942 from Dorsey High in Los Angeles. Bales served in the Army and was an electrical mechanic.

He married Phyllis Coyle on Dec. 27, 1950, and they moved to Van Nuys in 1956. She died in 2003.

Bales is survived by his son, Glenn; brothers Archie, Ray and Stan; a sister, Ida Mae; and a granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Old North Church at Forest Lawn Forest Lawn is the name of a number of different places:
