SATURDAY ON THE COURT WITH TATIANNA: A WORK OF ART FOR HART TATIANNA THOMAS PROVIDES NO. 1 INDIANS ANOTHER DIMENSION.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Opposing coaches typically are left scratching their heads trying to draw up some way to counter Hart High of Newhall junior forward Tatianna Thomas' remarkable combination of strength and athleticism and her propensity for attacking the basket.

However, new and revised entries in the list are always welcome. This is a list of hobbies.  and is strongly considering an architecture major, just likes to draw.

Her specialty is pointillism pointillism (pwăn`təlĭz'əm): see postimpressionism.

developed in the late 19th century in which tiny dots create an image only visible from a distance. She also dabbles in still/motion drawings.

These days, Thomas has little time for such artistic endeavors.

She instead is channeling all her creative energy to help lead Hart to what the Indians hope will be their fifth consecutive Foothill League title and 14th league championship in 17 years.

Hart (16-4 overall, 4-1 Foothill), ranked No. 1 by the Daily News, is tied for first place with Burroughs of Burbank (13-9, 4-1).

Thomas' favorite hobbies are, by her own admission, an odd mix.

``The two really don't have anything to do with each other; that's why it's kind of weird when people ask me, 'What are your hobbies?' '' she said.

Thomas has been drawing since she was in sixth grade, an endeavor encouraged by teachers who told her she had great potential.

She is a relative newcomer to basketball. The 5-foot-10 Thomas, who transferred to Hart from Alemany of Mission Hills last summer, didn't start playing organized basketball until she was 13.

Her athleticism has made her a quick study. Thomas excelled in track at Alemany, qualifying for the Mission League finals in the 200- and 400-meter events as a freshman. She suffered a season-ending back injury midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. Discovered by Americans in 1859, Midway was annexed in 1867. A cable station was opened in 1903.  through her sophomore track season.

Although Thomas' career is still a work in progress, she already has made a big impact at Hart.

Thomas is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging nine points and six rebounds. Her defense was a contributing factor for Hart in a defensive masterpiece Friday in a 43-29 league victory over then-No. 2 Canyon. The Indians held Canyon without a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Hart coach Dave Munroe said Thomas is an exceptionally coachable player who has made major strides in several areas, including defense, rebounding and free-throw shooting. He believes she has only begun to tap into her potential.

``She can definitely play at the next level, and I believe she can play Div. I,'' Munroe said.

Thomas' emergence has given an already powerful program an added dimension, senior guard Taylor Lilley said.

``She's given us another option,'' Lilley said. ``Not only do other people have to worry about (junior forward) Kalana (Inemer) and me, now they have to worry about Tat, because she's so good at penetrating penetrating

to design buildings that force people to take notice. For now, she is happy when fans notice her energetic playing style.

``When I make a basket, I try to make it my own,'' she said. ``I want people to say, 'Look at that rebound rebound (rē´bownd),
