SARA LEE CORPORATION TO NAME BOONSTRA PRESIDENT AND CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

CHICAGO, April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Sara Lee Corporation (NYSE: SLE) today announced that Cornelis Boonstra, executive vice president, will become president and chief operating officer effective July 1. He will succeed Paul Fulton, who announced a year ago his plans to step down as president on June 30 and to retire from the corporation on Dec. 31, 1993 to become dean of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
In his current position, Boonstra, 55, is responsible for Sara Lee's Coffee & Grocery and Household & Personal Care businesses based in the Netherlands. He is a member of the board of directors of Sara Lee Corporation, and is chairman of the executive committee and the board of management of Sara Lee/DE, located in the Netherlands. In his new position, Boonstra will be based in Chicago.
"This action allows time for an orderly transition of the duties of the president before Paul Fulton leaves to begin a new phase of his career," said John H. Bryan, chairman and chief executive officer.
Joseph F. Neely, senior vice president, will report to Boonstra and will continue to have responsibility for all Personal Products businesses, which include hosiery, intimate apparel, underwear and activewear. C. Steven McMillan, senior vice president, also will report to Boonstra and will continue to be responsible for the packaged meats, bakery and foodservice businesses. In addition, McMillan will assume responsibility for the Coffee & Grocery and Household & Personal Care businesses, and will manage these businesses from the Netherlands.
Boonstra joined Sara Lee in 1974 to become general manager of the corporation's Dutch Intradal division. He served in positions of increasing responsibility and was named chairman of the board of management of Sara Lee/DE in 1984.
Fulton, an alumnus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, began his career at Sara Lee Corporation's Hanes Hosiery division in 1959. He was named executive vice president and a member of the board of directors in 1987, and president in 1988.
Sara Lee Corporation, a global food and consumer products company, markets a variety of products under leading brand names including Hanes, Hanes Her Way, L'eggs, Bali, Champion, Playtex, Dim, Kiwi, Hillshire Farm, Ball Park, Jimmy Dean, Douwe Egberts and Sara Lee.
