SANTA SUSANA ROMPS.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

This is what Brandon Voorhees has been longing for. Not only is he putting up stellar offensive numbers - something he's grown accustomed to - he's playing for a team that's just as hot as he is.

The game was called after seven innings because of a 10-run mercy rule A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule (or, less commonly, knockout rule and skunk rule), brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. .

``It feels real good to play for a team with a winning record,'' Voorhees said. ``It builds up your confidence having a good team. We've won a lot of games lately and I think it's just going to keep building.''

The infielder/pitcher, who plans to play for Moorpark College Moorpark College is a California-state funded community college located on a 134 acre (542,000 m²) property reclining on a hill in Moorpark, a town in Ventura County, California. , earned All-Marmonte League honors after batting .412 with six home runs during his senior season. His Simi Valley High team, however, lingered near the bottom of the league standings throughout his high school career.

The void that Voorhees and many of his fellow Pioneers were left with is being filled by a Santa Susana team made up of Simi Valley and Royal graduates who have a 22-5-1 record, won the District 16 title and have a chance to win the area title when it plays Sunday.

``We're out here for the fun,'' Voorhees said, ``and I guess it's turned into something bigger. We were just looking to have some fun. That's why we put this team together, kind of as one last hurrah.''

Voorhees opened the door for Santa Susana in the second inning with a three-run double down the left-field line that gave Santa Susana a 5-0 lead. He also had a first-inning double.

John Whipp doubled in two runs in the first for Santa Susana. Four Westside pitchers, including loser Evan Faught, combined to give up 15 hits and allowed every Santa Susana starter to reach base at least once.

Brett Wayne went the distance for Santa Susana while striking out six. A fourth-inning home run by Sergio Corona was the only run the right-hander allowed.
