SANTA MAKES A DIFFERENCE; AREA GROUPS BRING CHRISTMAS OUT EARLY.

Even without a red suit and a round belly, volunteers and organizations throughout Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  took on the Santa role Saturday, hosting parties, passing out toys and providing Christmas spirit to the needy.

There were also places to meet Santa and ask those hard-hitting questions.

``I asked Santa if he was going on a diet, and he said yes,'' said Arturo Sotelo, 8, who came to the Glendale Cops for Kids Christmas party at the Glendale National Guard Armory.

Started by Lt. Doug Abney, the sixth annual pilgrimage delivers gifts to 400 children, said Officer Phillip Enbody. The orphanage receives no other private or government help.

The ninth annual ``Holiday Toy Lift,'' sponsored by children's social-service organization Centro de Ninos, transformed South Loma Drive in Los Angeles into a Christmas spectacle. About 3,000 children and Mayor Richard Riordan attended the event, which included Santa, toy giveaways, 11 fire trucks, entertainment and more, said volunteer Cozette Munatones.
