SANTA FE TO ACQUIRE 90 GE LOCOMOTIVES
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Santa Fe Railway

has announced it will acquire 90 locomotives manufactured by GE Transportation Systems at Erie, Pa. The units will be maintained by GE at the shared Argentine facility at Kansas City, under a joint Santa Fe/GE "power-by-the-mile" agreement.
"We are pleased to announce this acquisition, which will significantly increase our total fleet horsepower and further improve locomotive availability and reliability. About two-thirds of these locomotives are being purchased to handle anticipated new carload and intermodal business in 1992. We are also replacing some of our older, less efficient units. This acquisition will enable us to conform to the high standards we've set in meeting the expectations of our customers," said Robert D. Krebs, chairman, president and chief executive officer for Santa Fe Railway.
The order consists of 67 six-axle and 23 four-axle 4,000 horsepower Dash 8 locomotives. They will be equipped with a microprocessor that provides running diagnostics on engine performance to minimize emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. They will also have a comfort cab that Santa Fe locomotive engineers helped to develop, as well as the latest safety equipment. The units will be painted in the Super Fleet red and silver war bonnet design. Delivery is scheduled for the second and third quarter of 1992.
According to GE's J. Robert Malone, manager-North American locomotive marketing and sales, "We are delighted to receive this order and to expand our current service relationship with Santa Fe. We have developed an excellent working relationship with Santa Fe employees at the Argentine facility in Kansas City. We are looking forward to the delivery of these new locomotives and the continued partnership that this order represents."
