SANTA CLARITA LOSES CITY COMPETITION; 59 WENT TO PHILADELPHIA TO PUSH FOR AWARD.Byline: Patricia Farrell Aidem Staff Writers Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country, lost its bid Saturday to be named an All-America City in a national competition in Philadelphia sponsored National Civic League. The news came as a disappointment to fifty-nine Santa Clarita residents, a third of them children, headed east last Wednesday with hopes of bringing home the title All-America City. Santa Clarita, which became a city in 1987, was among 30 finalists for the honor and 10 winners were to be named. The award honors cities which recognize problems and work with the community to solve them. The 50-year-old program was established by the National Civic League, founded by Theodore Roosevelt, to recognize community involvement.
