SANTA CLARITA FOOD PANTRY 'FILLED TO THE RAFTERS'.

NEWHALL - The shelves of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Food Pantry were groaning Tuesday with neighborhood ``mail'' collected over the last few days, and pantry officials are calling the 11th annual Letter Carriers Food Drive a success.

``We go to the post office tomorrow for the last batch,'' said Belinda Crawford, the pantry's executive director. ``So far, it looks like they picked up 18 tons of food. We are filled to the rafters.''

Carriers were still picking up donations Monday and Tuesday to catch those who may have forgotten or were out of town on Saturday when the main drive was conducted. Collection totals were slightly less than last year's effort, which garnered 40,500 pounds compared to this year's 36,000.

``Even though we have a lot of food today, this will only get us through July,'' Crawford said.

But her outlook is anything but grim, with new projects on the horizon to increase the pantry's contributions to the community. The pantry served 2,055 clients in the month of April and is adding a new service starting Monday. Clients already in the Women with Infant Children program are excluded from participating.

Supplemental packages will be distributed once a month in addition to regular bags of food given out twice monthly.
