``Santa Clarita is so ready for this,'' Mayor Laurene Weste said. ``It's like planning your wedding all your life, and it all works.'' City officials were notified a week ago that Santa Clarita was picked as a host city. Under contract terms, chosen cities could not announce the news until Thursday. City officials applied last month to be part of the tour and, in return for the recognition, officials had to agree to close streets and provide police and marketing services for the race. About 50,000 fans, family members and others are expected to descend on the town when the race comes through. Just where the cyclists will ride is unclear because the race route is still undetermined. However, tour organizers were lured to Santa Clarita for its challenging hillsides, said Gail Ortiz, city spokeswoman. Valencia resident Fred Hoblit will be among the fans lining the streets as cyclists make their way around local roadways. The 50-year-old amateur cyclist participates in about 80 races each year and admires the professionals' skills. Calling them ``genetic mutants,'' Hoblit said it takes more than hard work to ride at their intense level. ``The average person just can't do this,'' he said. ``The top 10 percent of people genetically are in this race.'' The race premiered last year and raises money for cancer care and treatment. sue.doyle(at)dailynews.com (661)257-5254 CAPTION(S): photo Photo: (color -- ran in SAC Sac: see Sac and Fox. SAC - 1.
