 man pleaded not guilty Wednesday in the stabbing death of his roommate, who was arguing with his girlfriend and pulling her hair.

John Brent Hale, 37, is charged with murder in Saturday's slaying of Allen Dale Ward, 36, who was stabbed several times in the upper body after the victim got upset about a car battery, said Deputy District Attorney Mike Noyes.

Hale had been living with Ward and the victim's girlfriend in the 15100 block of Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling , authorities said.

Hale fled into the hills around the rural residence about 7:40 p.m. Saturday, and a search by deputies in a helicopter and on the ground was unsuccessful. He was arrested Monday night in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , officials said.

Dressed in a fatigue military jacket, a bearded and pot-bellied Hale stared at Newhall Municipal Judge H. Keith Byram as he set a preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. April 21.

Hale is being held without bail at the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Science author to speak at library

VALENCIA - Award-winning science writer Jerry Pournelle Jerry Eugene Pournelle, (born August 7, 1933) is an American essayist, journalist and science fiction author who contributed for many years to the computer magazine Byte. He has served as President of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.  will speak at the Valencia library Sunday, kicking off National Library Week celebrations.

Pournelle, the co-author of books including ``Higher Education'' and ``Beowulf's Children Beowulf's Children is a science fiction novel written by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Steven Barnes. It is the sequel to The Legacy of Heorot, and concerns the actions and fate of the second generation of colonists on the planet Avalon. ,'' and writer of the ``Chaos Manor'' column in Byte Magazine, will speak about the future from 2 to 4 p.m. The free lecture will be held at the library, 23743 W. Valencia Blvd.

Other events will be held during National Library Week, which has the theme ``Kids Connect the Library.''

9 Pitchess inmates injured during melee

CASTAIC - A fight among 20 to 30 inmates at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic left nine men injured, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The disturbance broke out about 10:40 p.m. Tuesday at the jail's North Facility and lasted about five minutes, said Deputy Kim Unland.

``The inmates used their feet, fists and jail-made slingshots,'' she said, adding that deputies used verbal commands to halt the violence.

One inmate was taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center and received stitches for a cut to his head, Unland said. Eight others were treated at a facility clinic.

Winds spark blaze, cause power outage

VALENCIA - High winds knocked down power lines Wednesday along Highway 126, about a half-mile west of Interstate 5, leaving some Valencia residents without power and causing a small fire that was quickly extinguished, firefighters said.

The fire broke out about 4 p.m. near a wheat field, said Firefighter David Bailey of Los Angeles County Fire Station 76 in Valencia.

The downed lines also knocked out traffic lights at Magic Mountain Parkway and The Old Road, authorities said. CHP CHP Chapter
