SANTA CLARITA: BRIEFLY : LITTLEROCK MAN HELD AFTER GUN RECOVERED.


LITTLEROCK - A 19-year-old Littlerock man was arrested Saturday after sheriff's deputies found a stolen gun with its serial numbers removed, sheriff's deputies said.

Rigoberto Acosta was taken into custody shortly after he began to run from deputies, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies noticed Acosta acting suspicious as he was using a public telephone at 90th Street East and Avenue S, they said.

``When deputies walked up on him, he began to run,'' said Deputy Jeff Acton. ``They chased him and caught him about 100 yards away.''

Rigoberto is being held at the Lancaster sheriff's station in lieu of $10,000 on suspicion of receiving stolen property.

The unidentified woman believed to be in her mid-30s was hit by the big rig at 1:35 a.m. on the Interstate 5 just south of Magic Mountain Parkway.

``The driver of the big rig was in the No. 3 lane driving at 55 miles per hour when the victim ran in front of his vehicle,'' said CHP Officer Garry Goldenberg.

National forest trees illegal to cut

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  - In their annual holiday warning, U.S. Forest Service officials noted that it is illegal to cut trees in national forests for use as Christmas trees.

Individuals can collect up to 10 pine cones and a couple of sprigs of mistletoe mistletoe, common name for the Loranthaceae, a family of chiefly tropical hemiparasitic herbs and shrubs with leathery evergreen leaves and waxy white berries. They have green leaves, but they manufacture only part of the nutrients they require.  for seasonal decorations, but collecting larger amounts for sale requires a Forest Service permit.

County delays move on sludge plant

LANCASTER - Los Angeles County supervisors delayed a decision on a proposed sludge composting plant until Jan. 28 to allow county staff to review plans for the facility.

 opted to delay a decision on an appeal made by the project's proponent, BioGro Division of Wheelabrator Clean Water Systems Inc. BioGro is appealing an August decision by the county Planning Commission to reject the project.

BioGro wants to establish the facility on 67 acres between Avenues A and B and 140th and 150th Streets West.
