SANTA CLARITA: BRIEFLY : AREA MAN ARRESTED IN DUI-ASSAULT CASE.


SYLMAR - A North Hills man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of cocaine and of assaulting a police officer after he punched a California Highway Patrol officer who was responding to a four-car collision, authorities said Monday.

Jose Menendez, 32, was in custody at the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. Police said Menendez's car ran out of gas about 10 a.m. Sunday, and was hit by three other vehicles in a chain-reaction crash. When the CHP arrived at the scene, Menendez got into a dispute with Officer Rick Miller, and hit the patrolman on the jaw, officials said.

Menendez was subdued only after the CHP officers used batons and pepper spray, and an off-duty Los Angeles firefighter and two civilians joined in the fracas, officials said.

SYLMAR - A man hitchhiking Hitchhiking (also known as lifting, thumbing, hitching, autostop or thumbing up a ride) is a means of transportation that is gained by asking people (usually strangers) for a ride in their automobile to travel a distance that may either be a short or long distance.  along the Golden State Freeway found the body of a man lying in a ditch just east of the truck lanes, authorities said Monday.

The California Highway Patrol closed the northbound truck lanes for four hours Sunday as homicide detectives investigated the area.

The body, described as a Latino in his 20s, was found face down.
