ARCADIA -- Trainer Richard Mandella Richard Mandella (born November 5, 1950 in Beaumont, California) is a Thoroughbred horse trainer and a member of the Racing Hall of Fame.

"It's always exciting to have it here at home, in our backyard," Mandella said. "It's been good to me, obviously. It's kind of phenomenal that I would have two days like that."

Mandella is tied for third with Neil Drysdale on the all-time trainers' list with six Breeders' Cup wins. D. Beginning this year at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., the Breeders' Cup will become a two-day event after Cup officials added three $1 million races -- the Dirt Mile, Filly & Mare Sprint and Juvenile Turf -- to the program. That brings the total for the event to 11races, with purses and awards totaling $23 million.

The 2008 Breeders' Cup, which will be Oct. 24-25, will mark the fourth time Oak Tree has hosted the championship -- and the seventh time it has been held in Southern California.

Santa Anita drew an on-track crowd of 69,155 when it first hosted the event in 1986, a record for a non-Churchill Downs Breeders' Cup.

Hollywood Park hosted the inaugural Breeders' Cup in 1984 and again in 1987 and 1997.

"Breeders' Cup and Oak Tree have made a great team, setting (wagering) records in each of the three years Oak Tree has hosted Breeders' Cup Day," Oak Tree executive vice president Sherwood Chillingworth said.

Breeders' Cup XXV will be the first run over a synthetic racing surface. Santa Anita is scheduled to renovate its main track and install an artificial surface this summer in time for the 2007 Oak Tree meet.

"There were absolutely no concerns in taking the Breeders' Cup to an artificial surface," said Greg Avioli, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Breeders' Cup Ltd. "I can see us coming back on a regular basis (to Santa Anita) because it's one of the best facilities in the country."

Santa Anita president Ron Charles and jockeys Richard Migliore and Aaron Gryder traveled to Australia earlier this week to test the synthetic surface Pro-Ride, one of the four artificial surfaces being considered by track officials.

Mandella is looking forward to the Super Bowl of horse racing being contested over a synthetic surface. The Hall of Fame trainer says he loves the new Cushion Track at Hollywood Park, which debuted during its meet last fall.

"I think it's one of the greatest things that's ever happened to racing," Mandella said. "I think it's pretty unanimous around with the horsemen. I mean, there are still some naysayers and people that don't believe yet, but the majority of the whole industry is behind it."
