Brother Derek had things his own way again Saturday, going gate to wire in dawdling splits of 23.60, 47.59 and 1:11.21. He was never seriously threatened while posting his third win without a loss in 2006 and sixth in eight races overall. The son of Benchmark becomes the 16th California-bred to win the Santa Anita Derby. No Cal-bred has won the Kentucky Derby since Decidedly in 1962. Hendricks steadfastly maintains that Brother Derek does not need the lead to win, that the colt is not some freak but rather a horse that takes advantage of its early tactical speed. He has won three times in gate-to-wire fashion and twice from just off the pace. When he broke his maiden going 4 1/2 furlongs last spring at Hollywood Park, he came from nearly seven lengths back. "There just haven't been any faster horses yet," Hendricks said. "There will be in the next one, though, and it's a whole different game. The Derby is what the Derby is, it's the horse race, and we're heading there and we're going to have fun with it." Solis had a lot of fun Saturday, winning his second Santa Anita Derby and first since 1986 when he guided another Cal-bred, Snow Chief, to a six-length victory. This one was so easy, he peeked over his right shoulder a few yards from the wire and stood up in the saddle to celebrate. "In a few races you get some emotion, and this was one of those races," Solis said. "This horse is just such a blessing for me, for Mister Peacock and for Dan, who is such an inspiration to all of us." A few weeks later, while riding at Del Mar, Solis broke his back and was sidelined seven months before returning during Santa Anita's 2004-05 meet. That the pair is an instrumental part of a major Kentucky Derby contender is a heart-felt story that figures to receive plenty of national attention between now and Kentucky Derby day. Solis believes Brother Derek is the best 3-year-old he has ridden and that it will take a special horse to beat him. "He's such a smart horse, you can do anything with him," he said. "If there's a rabbit on the lead, I can put him behind him. No problem. Today, he toyed with these horses. He did it so easy." Solis was asked if Brother Derek's win Saturday was his best effort. "I hope not," he said, with an obvious eye toward bigger things. "The thing is, we haven't really reached down yet. I'm so happy. He's still a fresh horse, still has a lot left in the tank, and that was our goal when we started the year." Brother Derek, who's a spotless 4 for 4 at Santa Anita, ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:48 and returned $3. Point Determined finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of A.P.
