SANTA ANITA: MASTER DAVID RULES SHAM HE ANSWERS BORREGO'S CHALLENGE.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

ARCADIA - The way they ran in the Sham Stakes The Sham Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses held in January at Santa Anita Park. The Sham Stakes is open to three-year-olds willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. A Grade III event, it offers a purse of $100,000.  at Santa Anita Santa Anita may refer to:

on Sunday, it was as if Master David knew he needed a victory to earn a ``Derby horse'' badge and Action This Day knew he was a champion just shaking off the winter rust.

Master David, ridden by Alex Solis Alex O. Solis (born March 25, 1964 in Panama City, Panama) is a jockey based in the United States. He currently lives in Glendora, California and rides predominantly in Southern California. He first gained national prominence when he won the 1986 Preakness Stakes with Snow Chief. , won with eye-catching tenacity after briefly dropping the lead to runner-up Borrego on the turn for home in the $81,400 Sham, an early West Coast steppingstone step·ping·stone

 to the Kentucky Derby.

``He ran a very game race,'' Solis said of the 3-year-old from trainer Bobby Frankel's powerhouse barn.

``I told (Flores), `Be careful with him,' '' trainer Richard Mandella said. ``I might have been at fault for giving bad instructions.''

All in all, the 1 1/8-mile race was encouraging for the handlers of Master David and the trio of 3-year-olds finishing a length behind him and heads apart - Borrego, Preachinatthebar and Action This Day.

Master David's second victory in six starts in England and the United States allowed his camp to confidently plot out a path to the Kentucky Derby on May 1, consisting of the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on March 13 and the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 10.

That's the route Frankel took with 2003 Sham runner-up Empire Maker, who won the Florida Derby and the Wood and was the Kentucky Derby favorite before finishing second to Funny Cide.

Master David, a smallish son of Grand Slam who finished second in the Remsen and third in the Santa Catalina, paid $4.20 after his odds plummeted to even-money shortly after the start. Action This Day, the morning-line favorite, went off at 9-5.

Mandella said he was satisfied Action This Day ran well, and said he'd consider a race in March before the Santa Anita Derby The Santa Anita Derby is an American Grade 1 thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds run each April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and carries a purse of $750,000.  on April 3.
