SANTA ANAS TO RETURN - ALONG WITH FIRE DANGER - IN HOT END TO SUMMER.

Byline: Andrea Cavanaugh Staff Writer

Summer is expected to hit Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  this week - just in time for fall.

, said Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

As a result, the National Weather Service issued a red-flag alert for today because of gusty winds and humidity below 15 percent.

Wednesday is the first day of autumn, but ``you can't tell it from the temperatures,'' Seto said. ``It's going to be a warm week.''

Winds of 25 to 35 mph, with frequent 45 mph gusts, are expected to wane this afternoon before returning on Wednesday, Seto said. Temperatures in the San Fernando Valley are expected to reach 87 degrees today and a sizzling siz·zle

The windy conditions have firefighters on alert in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, where Santa Ana winds combined with dry brush can create a recipe for disaster.

``The wind is always the one denominator that wreaks havoc with firefighters,'' said Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.

The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency response services for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, and for six other cities within the county.
. ``There's extreme fire danger. Fuel moisture is below critical, and the humidity is dropping.''

The next three months are expected to be warmer than average, but today's rising temperatures follow a cooler than usual summer, Seto said.

``It did seem to be on the mild side,'' he said. ``There weren't a lot of hundreds.''
