SANMINA CORPORATION TO EXPAND DALLAS BACKPLANE FACILITY

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Sanmina Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: SANM) announced today that it has signed a lease expanding its production facilities in the Dallas area significantly. The company will transfer existing employees and equipment to its new facility in Richardson, by Oct. 1, 1993.
"Our Richardson plant will produce backplane assemblies for top data and telecommunications companies in the region," said Jure Sola, Sanmina's president and chief executive officer. "Backplanes are large, sophisticated printed circuit boards that tie all of the electronic components together in products such as telephone switches or network servers. They have become an increasing proportion of our business as we have transitioned our focus to higher value, higher margin interconnect products. For the most recent quarter, ended June, backplane assemblies and subassemblies accounted for more than 63 percent of the company's revenues. This new facility, when it is fully up and running, should double our backplane capacity nationwide.
"Several of Sanmina's most important customers are located in the Dallas area," Sola continued. "We differentiate ourselves from other outsource suppliers to the electronics industry by offering our customers superior engineering and design services, a complete and broad range of manufacturing services (from bare boards to complete tested assemblies), extremely quick response times and inventory and materials management assistance through just-in-time delivery. By locating our production facilities close to our target markets we can provide this superior service on a cost effective basis. This allows us to increase the level of service to our existing customers and attract other firms throughout the South West," Sola concluded.
The company has hired Dallas resident Mike Landy, formerly of DSC Communications, to run the new facility. "Mike's strong background in manufacturing and quality control, his knowledge of telecommunications and the local business community makes him an ideal choice to run this operation," said Bob Behlman, Sanmina's chief operating officer.
Sanmina recently reported record sales and earnings for the three and nine month periods ended July 3, 1993. For the quarter, revenues increased 39 percent to a record $22.1 million, up from $15.9 million in the same quarter a year ago. Sanmina reported record net income for the quarter of $1.8 million, or 26 cents per share on 6.8 million weighted average shares outstanding, compared with a loss in the same quarter a year ago of $176,000, or 4 cents per share on 4.5 million weighted average shares outstanding.
For the nine months ended July 3, 1993, net sales increased 39 percent to $63.8 million, up from $46.0 million for the same period in fiscal 1992. Income before extraordinary item increased to $3.7 million, or 70 cents per share on approximately 5.3 million shares, compared with a loss of $1.6 million, or 36 cents per share on 4.5 million shares.
