SANDERSON NAMED CONNECTICUT PRESIDENT OF CITIZENS BANK

NEW LONDON, Conn., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Robert C. Sanderson Jr., comptroller and senior vice president of Citizens Financial Group, Inc., has been named president of Citizens' Connecticut banking operations, Citizens Bank of Rhode Island President and Chief Executive Officer Mark J. Formica has announced.
Sanderson will be based in New London at the headquarters of the former New England Savings Bank, which was acquired two weeks ago by Citizens from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He will be responsible for consumer and business banking activities at Citizens' 21 Connecticut offices of the former NESB.
"Our commitment as a community bank is to meet the banking needs of our local customers locally," Sanderson said, "and that means having men and women here in Southeastern Connecticut who not only know the region but can make the important financial decisions our customers need for their businesses and their personal lives."
"Bob Sanderson's career has paralleled the growth of Citizens and contributed to our strength," Formica said. "He has managed branches and supervised business lending, and those are the two areas that Citizens will emphasize here in Connecticut."
As head of the Corporate Planning and Control Group, Sanderson directed the due diligence and financial analysis teams that played important roles in Citizens Financial Group's recently announced merger with Boston Five Cents Savings Bank and acquisition of NESB from the FDIC.
Sanderson, 53, joined Citizens as a credit and loan officer in June 1965 after three years active duty as a Coast Guard officer. In 1975, he was named regional vice president for branch administration. In 1980, he was named senior vice president/credit supervisor in corporate banking, and in 1985, he was named senior vice president, corporate development. He became group head for Corporate Planning and Control in 1991. In addition to his other duties, he also served as chairman and chief executive officer of Gulf States Mortgage Co. Inc. from 1990 to 1993.
He has a long-standing relationship with the New London area. Between active duty and the reserves, Sanderson spent more than 20 years in the Coast Guard, rising to the rank of commander.
He is a graduate of Hamilton College and holds an MBA from the University of Rhode Island. He is a trustee of the Providence Public Library and vice president of the College Hill Neighborhood Association in Providence.
Sanderson and his wife, Mary, and their son, Graeme, plan to relocate to Connecticut in the near future.
Citizens Financial Group, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Royal Bank of Scotland plc and is comprised of Citizens Savings Bank and Citizens Trust Co., operating jointly as Citizens Bank, with 69 branches in Rhode Island and Connecticut; Citizens Bank of Massachusetts, which has 11 branches in southeastern Massachusetts; and Gulf States Mortgage Co.
