SANDERS TO BECOME SHONEY'S FRANCHISEE

NASHVILLE, Tenn., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Shoney's, Inc. (NYSE: SHN) today announced that Steve Sanders has resigned as president of its Shoney's Restaurant Division to become a Shoney's franchisee.
Shoney's, Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer James W. Arnett Jr. will assume additional responsibilities of overseeing the division on an interim basis.
Taylor H. Henry, chairman and CEO, said the resignation was effective this week and that two other senior level operations executives within the company will share the operations responsibilities for the division, reporting to Arnett.
John Clark, a 31-year veteran with the company and currently vice president of Operations for the Shoney's Restaurant Division, will be joined by William Marstellar, currently a regional director with the division, in sharing the leadership role. Clark has been vice president of Operations for three years. Marstellar joined the company in 1987, but prior to that had been president of Restaurant Management Services, the second-largest Shoney's, Inc. franchise operations headquartered in Macon, Ga. Marstellar was credited with a turnaround in sales and profit at RMS whereby Shoney's, Inc.'s $300,000 investment in RMS resulted in a $10.8 million return in 1988.
Henry said: "While this will be a short term assignment for Jim Arnett, he certainly has the proven track record to lead our Shoney's Restaurant operation. That's where he started with the company and he spent four highly successful years as the division's president. Likewise, in John Clark and Bill Marstellar, we have two proven operations veterans."
Shoney's, Inc. operates and franchises 1,829 Shoney's, Captain D's, Lee's, Pargo's and Fifth Quarter restaurants in 36 states and Canada. The company's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "SHN."
