SANDERS NAMED CHAIRMAN OF GEORGIA HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION

ATLANTA, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Larry S. Sanders, FACHE, chairman and chief executive officer of the Columbus Regional Healthcare System Inc. in Columbus, was named chairman of the board of trustees of the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA) at the association's annual convention in Atlanta Jan. 14.
Sanders, who served for six years as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of The Medical Center, Inc., an affiliate of Columbus Regional Healthcare System Inc., was nominated for the one-year term last year by GHA's nine-member nominating committee and was later approved by the GHA membership. He will lead GHA's 20-member board of trustees which is composed of hospital chief executive officers and hospital governing board members throughout the state. Sanders succeeds 1992 Chairman John A. Ferguson Jr., president and chief executive officer of Northeast Georgia Health Services Inc. in Gainesville.
"Without question, Larry is one of the brightest, most innovative health care leaders not only in the state, but in the country," GHA President Joseph Parker said. "He has been extremely successful in every administrative post that he has undertaken and during this crucial time of state and national health care reform, we are privileged to have his insightful leadership."
Also, during the association's annual assembly, James R. Lowry, administrator of Colquitt Regional Medical Center in Moultrie since 1982, was named chairman-elect. Lowry, a 1963 graduate of Auburn University and past president of GHA's southwest district, will succeed Sanders at the beginning of 1994.
In other elections during the assembly, Richard E. Bird, chairman of the Bulloch County Hospital Authority in Statesboro, and Charles H. Keaton, FACHE, president and CEO of the Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital in Columbus, were also named to the GHA board of trustees.
Bird, Bulloch County's hospital authority chairman since 1975, will serve a one-year term as one of three governing board representatives on the GHA policy board. Keaton, who served as chairman of GHA's board of trustees in 1990, will serve as a Georgia delegate in the Chicago-based American Hospital Association (AHA).
As a delegate of AHA, Keaton will represent Georgia's health care interests during the development of AHA policy. During the three-year term, Keaton will attend three, two-day AHA regional policy board meetings each year and will provide communication between members of the GHA and the AHA house of delegates and board of trustees.
Others who were re-elected to terms on GHA's board of trustees: District Trustee -- Bill G. Waters, FACHE, Floyd Medical Center in Rome; District Trustee -- Archer R. Rose, Rockdale Hospital in Conyers; Governing Board Representative -- Charles L. Braucher, Ph.D., Athens; Governing Board Representative -- Robert C. McMahan, Decatur; At-Large Trustee -- Eston Price Jr., Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton; and At-Large Trustee -- Paul D. Vogen, Middle Georgia Hospital in Macon.
