SAN FRANCISCO PRICES ROSE 0.1 PERCENT IN AUGUST -- UP 2.5 PERCENT SINCE AUGUST 1992

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumer prices in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose area increased 0.1 percent in August, according to Regional Commissioner Sam Hirabayashi of the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. He said that decreases in the food and beverages and apparel and upkeep categories virtually offset increases in four other major expenditure categories. The index for the other goods and services category remained unchanged. Hirabayashi added that the 2.5 percent over-the-year increase was the smallest in the San Francisco area since the 2.2 percent advance for the year ending February 1987. So far this year, Bay Area prices have increased 1.3 percent, compared to 2.1 percent in the first eight months of 1992. Local area prices are not seasonally adjusted.
The 10-county Bay Area All Items Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) reached 146.2 in August (1982-84 equals 100), 2.5 percent above August 1992 levels. Local prices had advanced 4.5 percent and 2.6 percent in the years ending August 1991 and August 1992 respectively.
Prices for food and beverages fell 0.5 percent last month as grocery prices (food at home) dropped 0.8 percent, the cost of alcoholic beverages fell 0.9 percent, and the cost of eating out remained unchanged. The decrease in grocery prices was led by a decline of 3.3 percent in the index for fruits and vegetables. The meats, poultry, fish and eggs component and the index for cereals and bakery products both decreased 0.5 percent. Prices for dairy products also fell, 0.2 percent, but the cost of miscellaneous grocery items rose 0.6 percent last month. When compared to August 1992 levels, local prices for food and beverages rose 0.8 percent.
The apparel and upkeep category fell 0.9 percent despite a rise of 2.0 percent in price tags for women's and girls' apparel. Last month, there were declines of 4.0 percent in the cost of footwear, and 3.1 percent in the index for men's and boys' apparel. When compared to a year ago, there were declines of 8.2 percent in prices for women's and girls' apparel, 6.3 percent for footwear, and 3.3 percent for men's and boys' apparel. The overall apparel and upkeep index declined 2.4 percent from August 1992 to August 1993.
Housing costs rose 0.2 percent last month as a 0.4 percent increase in the cost of shelter more than offset declines of 0.1 percent in the index for fuel and other utilities, and 0.4 percent in the cost of household furnishings and operation. When compared to a year ago, the cost of housing in the Bay Area rose 2.4 percent.
The transportation category rose 0.5 percent last month as gasoline prices fell 0.8 percent and the public transportation index, which includes airline fares, rose 4.6 percent. The drop in local gasoline prices was the seventh consecutive monthly decline, and the local gasoline index was down 5.2 percent over the year. Overall transportation costs rose 1.7 percent from August 1992 to August 1993.
The cost of medical care rose a slight 0.1 percent last month but this index was 6.8 percent above year-ago levels. The local cost of entertainment rose 0.2 percent and this index was up 4.9 percent over the year. The miscellaneous goods and services category was unchanged in August despite a 0.1 percent drop in the cost of personal care.
