Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2002 on a 152,000-square- foot Sam's Club store at a site east of 10th Street West and south of Avenue O-8. Expected to open in 2003, the store will provide 150 jobs and will include a cafe and florist, bakery and meat departments.

``I think Sam's Club will be a great addition,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said. ``Our No. 1 request from our residents is for this type of store.''

In a deal to be voted on Wednesday by the City Council, the city would reimburse developer Stan Rothbart for improvements he is making for a shopping center at 47th Street East and Avenue S in exchange for the Sam's Club opening in Palmdale.

Under the provisions of the deal, the city would pay $1.8 million to Rothbart 90 days after the Sam's Club store opens.

``The main sewer will open up additional capacity for the east side of town,'' Ledford said.

The east side shopping center will be anchored by a Wal-Mart store. San's Club is a division of Wal-Mart stores. Rothbart is the same developer who brought the Wal-Mart store to the Promenade promenade

City officials said they have been working on bringing in a big-box, warehouse-style retailer to Palmdale for seven or eight years. At one point during the 1990s, Lancaster officials accused Palmdale of trying to lure away their Costco store - a charge Palmdale officials denied.

The Costco discussion resulted in an anti-piracy agreement between the two cities in which they have pledged not to use incentives to lure away each other's major retailers and auto dealerships.
