SALUTING FATHERHOOD MEN'S GROUP PLANS TO CONDUCT SERVICE.

Byline: Holly Andres Staff Writer

RESEDA - Setting an example as both Christians and fathers, the men's group at First United Methodist Church First United Methodist Church is a common name for the first United Methodist church established in a particular locality. Many First United Methodist Churches exist around the world.  of Reseda will conduct the annual Father's Day service on Sunday.

The church, established more than 75 years ago, has recently hosted ordained or·dain

But the men's group members say they are up to the challenge, having participated and organized the service twice in the past.

``It is unusual for us not to have an ordained pastor present but we have a lot of people who could deliver the message if we didn't have a guest pastor,'' said Don Johnson, a church member since 1963. ``We're leading and not taking the easy road. I think having the men's group lead the service is a real good example for our youth.''

Johnson is part of the small group of dedicated men, formed in February 1997, that holds a men's breakfast and Bible study Bible study may refer to:

After breakfast at the meetings, group members read a section of the Bible and discuss how it relates to issues in their own life. They say the meetings offer fellowship and conversations that lead to a deeper understanding of their Christian beliefs.

``We have open-end discussions where everyone is free to give their opinion,'' Johnson said. ``We're looking for Looking for

``It is a small group, but a very committed group. It's important to me because I get to meet with other men friends,'' said Homer Homer, principal figure of ancient Greek literature; the first European poet. Works, Life, and Legends

On Sunday, Jason Castellucci will deliver the message with Hummel, and plans to discuss the different father figures in his life. His observations include the men he has come to know in the men's group.

``Those guys are role models for me. They're like fathers to me. They've supportive and I've learned a lot from them. They even stepped forward to usher USHER. Castellucci participated in last year's Father's Day service, which focused on fathers and children.

``As a group, we'll do well and we will get the message out about what Father's Day is all about,'' he said.

``It's an opportunity to thank not only our own fathers but our Father in heaven for everything they've provided,'' said Castellucci said. ``It's a time to celebrate fathers, of course, but also to ask, how can we help men be better fathers?''

Hummel plans to speak about some of the values passed on to him by his own father, and some of the principles shared by a former work colleague. He will also read a poem,. ``My Father By Design,'' written by fellow church member John Sanders John Sanders is the name of

accident on a past Father's Day. Johnson credits his faith and the support of his church for giving him strength through that difficult day, and the grief when his son eventually died.

``I have mixed feelings on Father's Day. There's the sad part, but it's a time for me to reflect on my children growing up,'' said Johnson, who cherishes photos of his children that he receives as Father's Day gifts.

``What did my father teach me?'' he reflected. ``I'm low-key and very patient. That's how my father was, too. He taught me continuous support for the family. My father went to church with us. He didn't just drop us off and go home. He was involved in the little things in our life that were important to us,'' said Johnson.

``Maybe things weren't verbalized, but he was always there for us.''
