SALESMAN JAILED ON DATE RAPE CHARGE.

Byline: Steven J. Gorman Daily News Staff Writer

A car salesman from Marina del Rey was ordered held on $2 million bail Friday after he was formally charged with drugging a woman during a dinner date, abducting the victim and raping her at his apartment.

At an arraignment in Culver City on Friday, the suspect, George ``Gino'' Spitzer, 40, pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape by use of drugs, one count of kidnapping for the purpose of rape and one count of robbery.

Prosecutors had sought to have bail revoked because they considered Spitzer, a Romanian citizen with a Canadian passport, a flight risk, said Deputy District Attorney James Grodin.

Spitzer was arrested Wednesday after a search of his apartment turned up several boxes of the drug Rohypnol and about 20 videotapes showing him having sex with a dozen women who appeared to be drugged, said Sgt. Noel Lanier of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

But in a strange twist to the case, Spitzer's identical twin brother, Julian, said in television news interviews that he was the individual shown on most of the videos and that all the women had consented to having sex with the brothers.

``They were not drugged, they were not drunk, there were not raped, they were not pushed around, they were not forced to do nothing except enjoy being with two good-looking guys,'' Julian Spitzer said.

The suspect's twin said the videotapes were made ``for our own private pleasure viewing,'' and that his brother's accuser went to bed with George Spitzer willingly.

Julian Spitzer also said he had been taking a prescription painkiller the night of the alleged rape and that his brother's date asked him for the pills to help her relax.

``I advised her not to take it, considering she was already consuming wine,'' he said. ``I gave her the pills, she took the pills, and minutes later she went into the bedroom.''

Sheriff's Deputy George Ducoulombier said Julian Spitzer was questioned by investigators the night his brother was arrested, had been cooperative and was not considered a suspect in the case.

Still, the account he gave to local news stations Friday had not been heard by authorities before, said Carol Larcade, one of the detectives investigating the case.

The search of George Spitzer's apartment in Marina del Rey on Tuesday stemmed from a complaint filed with sheriff's deputies by a Los Angeles woman, who said she had gone out to dinner in Santa Monica with Spitzer on July 9 and realized the next morning she had been drugged and raped by him, Lanier said.

``She does not remember anything after sitting in the restaurant'' until she woke up nude in Spitzer's bed, Lanier said.

According to the woman's account, Spitzer told her they had not had sex and drove her back to her car in Santa Monica, Lanier said.

``The victim knew she had been raped,'' Lanier said. ``Still groggy, she went to the Marina del Rey sheriff's station and reported the crime.''

He said detectives believe there are a number of ``other women who have been drugged, kidnapped and raped by George Spitzer,'' Lanier said.

A bail review for Spitzer, who works as a sales manager for a car dealership in La Puente, was set for Aug. 13 and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 21, Grodin said.

Anyone else who may have been a victim was urged to call the sheriff's station in Lennox at (310) 671-7531.
