 SALES INCREASE 10.8 PERCENT IN SEPTEMBER FOR
 THE MAY DEPARTMENT STORES COMPANY
 ST. LOUIS, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The May Department Stores Company (NYSE: MA) today reported preliminary sales increased 10.8 percent to $1.02 billion for the five-week period ended Oct. 3. Sales reported during the same period last year were $919.5 million. The September reporting period included Labor Day sales this year which were in August last year.
 Sales through the first eight months of fiscal 1992 increased 6.7 percent to $6.49 billion from sales of $6.09 billion in the similar period a year ago.
 Department store sales for September were $845.0 million, up 8.6 percent or $66.9 million from last year. Sales for Payless ShoeSource totaled $173.6 million, an increase of 22.8 percent or $32.2 million.

 A?) Store-for-store sales represent sales of those stores open during both years.
 During September, May opened a new May Company, California department store at Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita, Calif., and 33 net new Payless ShoeSource stores.
 Sales have been restated to exclude the sales of stores which have been closed and not replaced. Year-to-date revenues, including sales of nonreplaced closed stores and finance charge revenue, were $6.74 billion in 1992 and $6.49 billion in 1991.
 The May Department Stores Company is the largest department store retailer in the United States, operating 319 department stores and 3,459 Payless ShoeSource stores.
