SAFEWAY RELAUNCHES CHANGE FOR THE HUNGRY

SAFEWAY RELAUNCHES CHANGE FOR THE HUNGRY
OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- With a cash infusion of

$100,000 to get the program underway, Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) is reviving Change for the Hungry. The program, which allows customers to donate the change from their grocery bill to help feed the hungry, collected more than $1 million when it was conceived two years ago.
"We helped tens of thousands meet their food needs, with fresh produce, meats, dairy products, bread and other perishables that food pantries aren't usually equipped to handle," said Safeway CEO Peter Magowan. "It gives our customers an easy way to have a big impact on a problem facing all of our communities."
In some areas, Safeway customers can donate their change through special canisters at the checkstands. In others, Safeway shoppers will simply tell the checkers to "keep the change" and the donation will be rung up on the register.
Safeway channels the funds to its area partners, with the Salvation Army or area food banks disbursing food coupons or certificates to their clients.
