SAFEWAY ANNOUNCES TENTATIVE AGREEMENT WITH ALBERTA UNIONS

OAKLAND, Calif., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway (NYSE: SWY) announced today that negotiations with its Alberta unions during the past two weeks have resulted in their agreement to take a contract package offer to the employees for vote within the next 15 days.
"The contract package that is being proposed, in conjunction with the pricing reductions that were made throughout the Alberta Division last week, will position the division for long-term growth," said Bob Bradford, senior vice president of public affairs for Safeway Inc. "We have been encouraged by the customers' response to our reduced prices," said Bradford.
The reported interest of Westfair Foods Ltd., a direct competitor in the Alberta marketplace and a unit of Loblaws Cos., to purchase the Alberta Division was viewed as a tactic designed to hinder both the discussions between the company and its employees' unions, and the subsequent vote by the employees upon the proposed agreement.
