SAFEWAY ANNOUNCES NEW GENERAL COUNSEL; ROSNER TO RETIRE, ROSS TO JOIN COMPANY

OAKLAND, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) announced today that Bernat Rosner, 61, the company's highly regarded general counsel, will be retiring on Jan. 31, 1994. His successor will be Michael C. Ross, 45, a partner with the law firm of Latham & Watkins.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Rosner graduated from Cornell University, served as a U.S. Army officer for two years and received his law degree from Harvard University before joining Safeway in 1959. He progressed to senior attorney (1971), assistant general counsel (1980) and vice president (1981) prior to being named senior vice president-law, secretary and general counsel in 1984.
"During his tenure as general counsel, Bernie has provided expert legal guidance through one of the most turbulent periods in Safeway's history," said Peter A. Magowan, the company's chairman and chief executive officer. "We will miss his wise counsel."
A nationally recognized authority on antitrust law, Rosner has written several publications on the subject and is a regular speaker at professional seminars and conferences. He is past vice chairman of the Antitrust Law Section of the American Bar Association.
Ross graduated from the University of Virginia. Following military service as a U.S. Naval officer, he returned to the same school to earn his law degree in 1977, and joined Latham & Watkins later that year. Currently a senior partner with the firm, Ross has focused on all aspects of corporate and transactional law representing a diverse set of business clients.
Ross will become Safeway's general counsel effective July 1, 1993. To help ensure an orderly transition of responsibilities, Rosner has agreed to stay on as general counsel emeritus through January 1994.
