The meeting, which will feature a panel of community members, school staff, law enforcement and student representatives, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Tuesday: see week.  at the school, 44900 Division St.

``I know that, as a result of the incidents at the end of January, parents wanted to know what programs we had in place to address safety, and they also wanted to be able to give input on other ways to ensure students' safety on and off campus,'' Principal Karen Patterson said.

On Jan. 27, nearly a dozen fistfights broke out on campus, which sheriff's deputies said were the result of ongoing racial tension between groups of African-American and Latino students.

The next day, another fight occurred after school had been dismissed. An undisclosed number of students were arrested.

The school has not had any incidents since the second fight, Patterson said.

``That was the first incident of that scale that we have had all year long,'' Patterson said. ``So pretty much when you have students who are having difficulty, when those students are removed, we go back to what we've been experiencing and that is a calm campus.''

The town hall meeting will discuss new safety initiatives, including an innovative program in which volunteers will watch a one-mile area around the school and extra deputies will combat narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required. , gang activity and general student misconduct MISCONDUCT. High school officials are encouraging parents and residents to attend the town hall meeting, citing the importance of open communication.

``I want to develop a sense that everyone is on the team and working together,'' Patterson said. ``When you are able to pool resources you can develop some very effective strategies.''
