Byline: Krystn Shrieve Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - It's all about Jesus and java. It's where Yahweh meets latte. It's called Solid Grounds.

Solid Grounds, a coffee shop now owned by NewHart Foursquare Church, will open this week in Simi Valley offering a place of refuge from the daily grind Daily Grind could refer to:

``Jesus always hung out in the community,'' said minister Paul Kuzma. ``And so that's our philosophy, too. This is just another way to reach out to the kids and families in our city.''

The coffee house, at the southwest corner of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Avenue and Hubbard Street Hubbard Street is a road in Chicago, Illinois named for early settler Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard. It's being run by church volunteers and will only be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Various church groups will meet there other days of the week.

General manager Cathy Mashy, a church member for eight years, said religion will not be forced on the coffee house patrons.

``There will be no Bible thumping,'' said Mashy, who volunteered for the job because she has more than 25 years of experience training people in the food service industry. ``We're just a coffee house and we're just here to provide a safe and fun environment. Some people might not even realize that we're Christians, maybe they'll just sense that, within these four walls, they're comfortable and accepted.''

, but this is even better. I could bring any of my friends here and they'd like it, because we can all relax and just be ourselves.''

Manager Eric Mejia, the church's youth minister, went through a practice run one recent night, making sure the staff knew how to grind the coffee beans and make the lattes, mochas, espressos and some fancier drinks like the Red Eye - two shots of espresso in coffee - and the Americano - two shots of espresso in water.

``I worry about things like drugs and gangs and the type of music my kids are listening to,'' said Rhonda Ruppel, as she sipped a mocha Mocha (mō`kə), town (1990 est. pop. 2,000), S Yemen, a port on the Red Sea. ``But here I won't have to worry about that kind of stuff. Kids out there just want a place to go, somewhere where they can feel accepted and not have to put up a front. I wish there was a place like this when I was growing up.''
