SAFE Commission defended.

We were disappointed to read of your opposition to the Securing America's Future Economy (SAFE) Commission Act legislation that we introduced (September/October DA V Magazine). We have been strong supporters of veterans throughout our years in Congress and our commitment remains steadfast. The men and women who bravely serve in our Armed Forces deserve not only our utmost gratitude and respect, but also tangible resources that provide for them and their families during and after their service. Veterans health care spending--which is particularly critical right now as injured in·jure

unsustainable growth that will triple the costs of these programs over the next several decades. We must ensure that we have the necessary resources available for programs such as veterans' benefits Throughout history war veterans have received compensation. Roman soldiers were given rewards at the end of their service including cash or land (praemia). Addressing these issues is also critical to ensure countries that hold our debt do not control our future. That is why we believe we need a bipartisan commission to examine the long-term fiscal challenges facing our nation.

The SAFE Commission provides an opportunity to thoughtfully address fiscal challenges, reflect on national priorities and avoid arbitrary cuts or caps. In order to help determine national priorities, the commission would hold public hearings to engage the American people An American people may be:

, including veterans, in a national conversation about our country's financial future.

It is impossible to repay America's veterans for defending our liberty and freedom, but we continue to try to provide for their needs. We salute their service and we hope this letter helps explain why we have proposed creating the SAFE Commission. We also hope it will put their minds at ease by understanding that this commission, if enacted, would protect their futures, not put them in jeopardy jeopardy, in law, condition of a person charged with a crime and thus in danger of punishment. At common law a defendant could be exposed to jeopardy for the same offense only once; exposing a person twice is known as

double jeopardy.

: The SAFE Commission's stated goal is to "reform tax policy and entitlement benefit programs," which by definition include veterans' disability compensation and other benefits; there would be no guarantee that any savings would be used for veterans programs.
