SADC free trade programme needs a prod. (Trade).

) into a free trade area in by 2012, needs to be speeded by at least four years if it wants to catch the bus. SADC's chief executive, Prega Ramsamy, says "the time frame should be revisited in light of what is happening in Africa and the world at large." What bothers Ramsamy is that the United States is talking about a free trade agreement with the SA Customs Union customs union

 the SADC. The members agreed to implement the free trade status at a symbolic meeting in September 2000 and set a target date of 2012. "We cannot continue with this slow rate of development' says Ramsamy. "We need to bring all tariffs to zero by 2008."
