A PILOT was sacked and a stewardess forced to quit after they refused to fly a jet they believed was unsafe.

 Daudin, 32, and Paula Day, 33, were dismissed when they walked off the Transjet plane with 250 people aboard. A male steward who also quit has since returned to work. Speaking from France last night Mr Daudin said: "I was fired for putting the safety of passengers first. It seems very unfair. There had been engine trouble and two tyres were not within the limits."

Mum Paula, of Hemsworth, West Yorks, said: "When the first officer refuses to fly on safety grounds, you listen. Our bosses put us in an unreasonable position - and the passengers had no idea."

The MD-80 jet from Manchester to Preveza, Greece, took off with new staff after a seven-hour delay. It landed safely on June 2. Sweden-based Transjet has been hit by safety fears on two other jets this month. It declined to comment.
