Adults with Skills Needed in Today's High-Tech Environment

 that provides low-income families with access to technology tools and resources, today announced the success of the S1 Volunteer Day, held Saturday, July 8th at TCGA's headquarters in East Point, Georgia The City of East Point is southwest of the neighborhoods of Atlanta in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 39,595. . Employees from S1 joined TCGA staff members to teach 15 students from Banneker High School how to build their own computer. Volunteers spent five hours helping the students learn how to install hard drives, floppy disk drives floppy disk drive - disk drive , RAM and software and also worked with a group of parents to teach basic computer and word processing word processing, use of a computer program or a dedicated hardware and software package to write, edit, format, and print a document. Text is most commonly entered using a keyboard similar to a typewriter's, although handwritten input (see pen-based computer) and  skills that are essential in today's high-tech workplace. At the end of the day, the students and parents received refurbished computers, donated by members of the community.

TECH CORPS Georgia (TCGA), a charter affiliate of the national TECH CORPS organization, was established in 1993 as Computers for Classrooms, Inc. Since that time, TCGA volunteers and staff have refurbished over 1100 donated computers and redistributed them, along with training, to over 520 metro Atlanta K-12 teachers from 42 area schools and over 265 low-income families and students.
