S.S. DIV. IV SEMIFINALS: ROYAL UPSET IN QUARTERS DOS PUEBLOS 9, ROYAL 5.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

OXNARD - The players lingered in the water longer than usual. They didn't expect to be leaving it this soon.

The top-seeded Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  boys' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. Dos Pueblos (22-5) quickly derailed those plans, grabbing an early lead it never lost.

``This is really a tough loss,'' Highlanders coach Steve Snyder said. ``They played a great game. Even with as much as a comeback as we had, it wasn't enough.''

Dos Pueblos opened with a 4-0 lead and were up 5-1 at halftime. A Royal offense that scored a combined 24 goals in the first two rounds of playoffs was held scoreless until Adam Thomas fired in a shot at the post with 4:03 remaining in the second quarter.

The Highlanders couldn't recall facing a defense as troublesome as Dos Pueblos' in several weeks.

``Their defense put us on our heels, and we couldn't respond to it,'' Snyder said. ``We finally did, but it wasn't enough.''

Royal pulled within a goal with three consecutive goals in the third quarter, but it failed to convert on multiple opportunities to even the score.

Diamond tipped a potential tying shot wide of the goal, Dos Pueblos started a three-goal run that gave them 8-4 cushion with 3:20 left in the game.

The Chargers' Cody Wiesen, Sage Wright and Kevin Kuga scored two goals each.

Royal received goals from Nick Laszlo, Ben Cobb, Tyler McClure, Tyler Diamond and Thomas. Highlanders goalkeeper Matt Lewis made 11 saves.

Royal couldn't help but wonder what might have been if it had been at full strength. Starter Juan Camero was lost in the first round of playoffs with a shoulder injury. The team's depth was further depleted de·plete

``It's disappointing to end it here,'' said Snyder, who graduates just two starters. ``Otherwise (the season) was great.''
