S. Korean university gives grant to UO.

The two-year grant will be used in four areas: $260,000 for student exchanges, $135,000 for faculty exchanges, $80,000 for capital projects and $25,000 for joint conferences. Of the money set aside for capital projects, $50,000 will be used to renovate the International Resource Center and $30,000 will be used to convert a classroom to a state-of-the-art language teaching lab.

The resource center, located in the Erb Memorial Union, includes a lounge, library and study area for international students. It also is used for social events and as a place where American and foreign students can gather and share experiences.

 established a relationship with the university in 2001 as a result of a visit by the head of the linguistics department and the vice provost for academic affairs. That led to a joint English As A Second Language program and, two years ago, a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program.

Last year, a Hanyang representative visited Eugene with an offer of a $500,000 grant for the UO's international programs. The UO submitted a proposal that was later accepted by Hanyang administrators.

UO President Dave Frohnmayer visited Hanyang last year with Tom Mills, the UO's associate vice president for international programs.

Hanyang is a leading private university in South Korea. Its main campus is northeast of downtown Seoul and a second campus is in Ansan.
