S/S United States arrives in Philadelphia; Philadelphia Naval Shipyard selected.

The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  have announced that the vessel arrived this morning at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in Philadelphia.

The S/S United States, which has been out of service since 1969, will be docked at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, formerly Navy Yard, was the first naval shipyard of the United States. The site's role as a U.S. Navy facility ended on 30 September, 1995. Soon after, the site became a commercial shipyard, currently called the Aker Philadelphia Shipyard.  until final financing of approximately $250 million and conversion plans are completed, said executives from Marmara Marine, owners of the vessel.

The ship departed on June 15 from Istanbul, Turkey, for her long awaited return voyage to the United States. This celebrated vessel, still holds the Blue Riband for "Fastest Ship In The World," was purchased by Marmara Marine in 1992 and has been moored in Turkey.

The S/S United States entered transatlantic service in 1952 and was the most technologically advanced ocean liner of her day, designed by America's foremost marine architect William Francis Gibbs William Francis Gibbs (August 24, 1886 - September 6, 1967) was a renowned naval architect who directed the mass production of cargo ships for the United States during World War II, including the famous Liberty ships, of which 2,751 were built.  of Gibbs & Cox, New York New York, state, United States
