Russian Scientists Honor ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller's Lorne G. Everett, Ph.D., D.Sc.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 1999--

Lorne Everett, Ph.D., D.Sc., Vice President and chief research hydrologist with ARCADIS Geraghty & Miller, an environmental and engineering services consulting firm, has been awarded the Kapitsa Gold Medal of Honor from the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Academy is the center for fundamental research in the natural and social sciences within the Russian Federation. The medal is awarded for original research, and honors the memory of Pyotr Kapitsa, a 1978 Nobel Prize winner in physics.

Dr. Everett is being honored for his original contributions in researching and developing methodologies for tracking water-borne contaminants in subsurface soils. He is charter director of the University of California - Santa Barbara Vadose Zone Monitoring Laboratory and, as such, has been leading efforts to develop national standards for sampling contaminants and monitoring contaminant transport in the vadose zone. Dr. Everett co-chaired the first conference session on cleaning up the USSR's nuclear and industrial wastes during the 1990 USSR-American conference on environmental hydrogeology. He was inducted into the Russian Academy in 1995. Dr. Everett is expected to receive the medal during the World Laboratory meeting to be held in October 1999 at the Beau Rivage Palace in Lausanne, Switzerland.

With a Ph.D. in hydrology from the University of Arizona - Tucson, Dr. Everett holds an honorary doctorate from Lakehead University in Canada for distinguished achievement in hydrology. Last year, Dr. Everett was elected to the Centennial Board of Directors for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In 1997, the society honored Everett with its Ivan A. Johnston Award for Outstanding Contributions to hydrogeology. He has developed 11 national ASTM monitoring standards, holds several patents, and has published 12 books and more than 150 technical papers. Dr. Everett's earliest book, "Groundwater Monitoring," was endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as establishing the "state of the art used today."
