Two-time Olympian Marla Runyan Marla Runyan, born January 4, 1969 in Santa Maria, California, is a marathon runner who is legally blind.

After graduating from Camarillo High School in 1987, Ruyan went on to study at San Diego State University, where she began competing in several sporting events: the

The 35-year-old Eugene resident plans to end that drought with an appearance in the 10,000 meters Friday night during the distance portion of the Oregon Invitational at Hayward Field For other uses of "Hayward", see Hayward (disambiguation).

The race is tentatively scheduled for 10:15 p.m. It will be only the second time Runyan has run a 10K on the track.

`I'm excited and a little nervous,' said Runyan, who has been busy of late taking care of her 7-month-old daughter, Anna Lee.

`(The 10K) is still an unknown event for me, but I figure what better place to start out than under the lights at home. There's really no pressure at all. I just want to run my best, and I think this will be a good environment.'

Runyan's 10K personal best of 31 minutes, 46 seconds was set on the road. She hopes to run under 32 minutes this week, but the more important goal is to better the U.S. qualifying standard of 33:50.

After giving birth to her daughter on Sept. 1, 2005, Runyan took several months off before resuming training in late January. She is currently running about 70 miles per week, with plenty of long intervals and tempo runs on the track. A nagging hip injury is about `75 to 80 percent resolved.'

`Hopefully, when I get out there Friday night, it won't be an issue,' Runyan said. `This is an opportunity to race, and having had more than a year off, I need a race. I'm still working my way back, so we'll see how it goes.'

`My understanding of what twilight means was born in Eugene,' said Vin Lananna, the director of track and field at Oregon. `It's nothing revolutionary. We just wanted to take advantage of that time of day, and if conditions are ideal, we should have some great performances.'

UO hammer thrower

earns Pac-10 field honor

Oregon junior Britney Henry claimed the Pac-10 women's field event athlete of the week award Monday.

Henry broke her own school record with a season-best mark of 221 feet, 7 inches in the hammer throw at the Mount SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., this past Saturday. Her effort also broke the Pac-10 record of 219-5 set by UCLA's Jessica Cosby in 2004.

The first-year Duck ranks ninth on the all-time U.S. list with a PR of 223-8 set while competing unattached last year. Only two collegians have ever thrown farther than Henry's PR - recent NCAA champions Loree Smith of Colorado State (229-9, 2005) and Candice Scott of Florida (229-5, 2004).
