Publisher Larry Birger emphasized that Runways "never had aimed at being strictly a Southern California Publication." It had expansion plans when it started, he said, and it's not inconceivable that several regional editions will be created in coming years. Although there are no concrete plans to extend it beyond a Western edition.

"Yet, eventually -- Western, Eastern, regional editions -- Western, Eastern, Northeast, Northwest, Midwest, and so on," said Birger, who founded the magazine for Knight-Ridder Inc.

Among the reasons Knight-Ridder committed to publishing Runways was the discovery of a report compiled for the city of Los Angeles

"We're only talking about four airports," Birger said just weeks before Runways premiere issue. He noted that there are more than 25 airports in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Orange counties.

Runways started as a weekly but cut back to a twice monthly publication schedule with its July 15 issue. It was having problems with advertising support, Birger said. He added there has been "some pick up" in advertising since then, but not enough to return to a weekly schedule.

The reason why it expanded to add coverage in the West, he said, was that readers indicated a desire for wider industry coverage. "They wanted to know about Boeing, about the Portland area and such subjects as airline maintenance bases," he said.

Runways, published in a compact, fourcolour tabloid format, provides information for managements of national and regional airlines, corporate aviation, airframe and aerospace manufacturers and suppliers.

The publication, mailed free of charge to the "top 10 percent" of Southern California's aviation industry, has a circulation of 33,000.
