The status quo to be preserved by a preliminary injunction is the last actual, peaceable, uncontested status which preceded the pending controversy. . The title story exposes the internal conflict of a young woman yearning to break free of the husband she loves but cannot seem to please or leave. Another makes us privy to the thoughts and feelings of a young girl who suspects that her parents may have adopted her as a replacement for an infant daughter killed years earlier in a car accident. Still another story inspects a life-altering disappointment in love and its perverse aftermath. While there is little upbeat about these tales, the protagonists do cope and are, if not exactly happy, among society's productive survivors.

Munro's writing is precise and almost clinical. Dakin's minimally differentiated narration, soft and clear yet strong, perfectly matches the bravery with which these women confront their destinies. Francine Levitov, Attorney, New York New York, state, United States
