Ruling on veracity of news releases opposed by press. (Law).


SEVERAL California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  media groups filed a brief Feb. 24 with the U.S. Supreme Court, challenging a recent California Supreme Court ruling they claim could limit their stories about businesses.

The high court will hear arguments next month on a May 2002 decision that says corporate announcements, press releases, letters to the editor and other speech are subject to the state's Business and Professions Code Section that is supposed to protect consumers from unfair or illegal business practices.

The brief claims the California Supreme Court decision "seriously jeopardizes the media's ability to report on important issues regarding corporate America America [for Amerigo Vespucci], the lands of the Western Hemisphere—North America, Central (or Middle) America, and South America. " by removing assurances that "innocent misstatements or unintentionally misleading remarks" will not subject companies to lawsuits.

The media groups contend that comments to the press are not the same thing as advertising and that a story excluding such comments may be too unbalanced or unfair to publish, according to according to
