Rugged laptop enters the market.


A Lake Forest, Calif., company is producing a military-rugged laptop that is predicated on a fanless design that permits operation in extreme temperatures ranging from -4 degrees F to more than 130 degrees F. Fabricated by Getac Inc., the Mobile Force A770 notebook was designed for military, emergency services, public safety, law enforcement and field maintenance people.

At the heart of the laptop is an Intel processor of 1.4 Ghz, a front side bus speed of 400 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  and secured wireless communications. It also has 60 gigabytes of disk storage and up to 1 gigabyte of high-speed double data-rate memory.

The laptop can be configured with either a 12.1 inch or 14.1 inch XGA (EXtended Graphics Array) A screen resolution of 1,024x768 pixels. The term stems from IBM's XGA display standard introduced in 1990, which extended VGA to 132-column text and interlaced 1,024x768x256 resolution. Depending on options, the laptops are priced between $4,000 and $5,000.
