Rubber soul: an activity centre uses innovative recycled tyre shingles.

Essentially two sides of the same coin, environmental stewardship The integration and application of environmental values into the military mission in order to sustain readiness, improve quality of life, strengthen civil relations, and preserve valuable natural resources.  and sustainable design find concerted expression in a new visitor centre for Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, administered by the National Park Service, preserves almost 70,000 acres (283 km²) of land along the Delaware River's New Jersey and Pennsylvania shores. . Bohlin Cywinski Jackson were asked to design a new visitor activity centre for the park that would act as a general gathering space for dining, meetings, lectures and other activities. Through form, materials and energy use, the building was also expected to promulgate To officially announce, to publish, to make known to the public; to formally announce a statute or a decision by a court.  the principles of environmental awareness. The outcome is an apparently modest, glazed pavilion in the landscape, but within this clean-cut Scandinavian simplicity there are nuances of mood and sleights of hand. Crossing through forest and wetland, visitors arrive at the building's long north side, a gently curving wall clad in strip-like 'shingles' made from recycled tyres. Penetrating this rubbery plane brings you into a bar of services and then finally into a south-facing gathering space at the heart of the building. Capped by a heavy-brimmed monopitch timber roof, this great room is enclosed by glazing on three sides to take advantage of light, warmth and forest views.

Energy strategy and choice of materials clearly manifest a concern for wider issues. The dark concrete floor acts as a heat store, radiating warmth back into the building at night. The oversailing roof is designed to eliminate solar gain in high summer, while generous porches at the east and west ends also help to screen glazing. Openable windows assist with natural ventilation, and hot air is dissipated at high outlets through the stack effect.

The main gathering space is separated from the ancillary zone by a concrete frame which provides support for the roof structure of timber and steel bowstring trusses. The frame is infilled by blocks etched with animal tracks, leaf outlines and other natural images (all drawn by children), poetically restating the mission of environmental education.

Wherever possible, recycled or recyclable materials are used, the most obviously innovative example being the rubber shingles shingles: see herpes zoster.
