Rubber Division meetings and opportunities. The Rubber Division, American Chemical Society The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in , will be offering opportunities to attend several technical programs during 2004. The first is the 165th Spring Technical Meeting to be held May 17-19 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel Amway Grand Plaza Hotel is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is named after Amway Corporation, which is based in Grand Rapids. Originally known as The Pantlind (founded in 1913), Amway Grand Plaza Hotel reopened in 1981 after extensive renovations including the addition in Grand Rapids, MI. In addition to the numerous papers on rubber and polymer technology, this meeting also includes a Science and Technology Awards Banquet at which three distinguished award winners will be honored including Dr. Oon Hock Yeoh, senior staff engineer, Mechanical Products Division, Lord will receive the Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology Award, sponsored by Crompton/Uniroyal Chemical; Dr. Roderick P. Quirk, Distinguished Professor of Polymer Science, Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science, University of Akron Enrollment in fall 2006 was 23,539 students.[1] The school offers more than 200 undergraduate degrees [2] and 100 graduate degrees [3]. The University's best-known program is its College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, which is located in a will receive the George Stafford Whitby Award for Distinguished Teaching and Research sponsored by Cabot; and Dr. Andy H. Tsou, senior staff engineer, Butyl butyl /bu·tyl/ (bu´t'l) a hydrocarbon radical, C4H9. bu·tyl n. A hydrocarbon radical, C4H9. butyl a hydrocarbon radical, C4H9. Polymers Technology, ExxonMobil Chemical the recipient of the Sparks-Thomas Award sponsored by ExxonMobil Chemical. The second opportunity is the result of discussions over the past year between the rubber and asphalt industries in which the Division has entered into its first-ever joint program with other associations in the rubber and asphalt industries. Immediately following the spring meeting, the "Rubber Modified Asphalt Conference--Working Together to Improve Roads" will be held May 19-20, at the same hotel. It is cosponsored by the Rubber Division, Rubber Manufacturers Association, Rubber Pavements Association, National Asphalt Pavement Association, National Center for Asphalt Technology, Asphalt Institute, Federal Highway Administration The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a division of the United States Department of Transportation that specializes in highway transportation. The agency's major activities are grouped into two "programs," The Federal-aid Highway Program and the Federal Lands Highway and the Region 4 Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and . The conference will inform attendees about the uses of rubber-modified asphalt, facilitate discussions between industries and government agencies, gain knowledge between industries on materials and specifications and open opportunities to expand the use of rubber modified asphalt. Two of the many highlights will be a keynote address by the well-known FHWA FHWA Federal Highway Administration (US DoT) Highways for LIFE Program Coordinator, Byron Lord, and a luncheon presentation by Andy Acho of Ford. In addition to the presentations, there will be opportunities for companies to display their products and services via tabletop exhibits and other sponsorship programs. The third opportunity is the Rubber Division's 166th Fall Technical Meeting and Rubber Mini Expo '04 to be held in Columbus, OH, October 5-8. This will include hundreds of technical papers and hundreds of exhibitors displaying their products and services to the rubber and polymer industries. In addition, the Rubber Division is in the process of establishing a second career workshop to help new people in the industry and those who are changing positions. The Division also hopes to offer its first student colloquium col·lo·qui·um n. pl. col·lo·qui·ums or col·lo·qui·a 1. An informal meeting for the exchange of views. 2. An academic seminar on a broad field of study, usually led by a different lecturer at each meeting. , to be held separately within the overall technical program, and specifically targeting university undergraduate and graduate students to present technical papers and posters.
