Royal Caribbean begins year-round Far East cruises.

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1995--On Dec. 17, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line A cruise line is a company that operates cruise ships. Cruise lines have a dual character; they are partly in the transportation business, and partly in the leisure entertainment business, a duality that carries down into the ships themselves, which have both a crew headed by the  began year-round Far East vacations when passengers boarded the 710-passenger Sun Viking in Singapore for its first 14-night "Jewels of Southeast Asia Southeast Asia, region of Asia (1990 est. pop. 442,500,000), c.1,740,000 sq mi (4,506,600 sq km), bounded roughly by the Indian subcontinent on the west, China on the north, and the Pacific Ocean on the east. Royal Caribbean is the largest cruise line ever to offer year-round cruises in the region and is the only mainstream cruise line to make such a commitment. In addition to a 14-night itinerary from Singapore, Royal Caribbean offers four other itineraries of 13 or 14 nights beginning in Singapore, Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov. , Beijing or Tokyo.

Passengers on the inaugural cruise from Singapore were welcomed at the gangway by 12 hand drum A hand drum is any type of drum that is typically played by Chris Singh with the bare hand rather than a stick, mallet, hammer, or other type of beater. The simplest type of hand drum is the frame drum, which consists a shallow, cylindrical shell with a drumhead attached to one of  performers of the Malay Kompang troupe, and Bunga Mangga carriers -- the traditional welcome at auspicious Malay functions. The ceremony included such Singaporean customs as "the Dotting of the Eyes," signifying good luck and prosperity, and the Lion Dance Lion dance (Simplified Chinese: 舞狮; Traditional Chinese: 舞獅; Pinyin: wǔshī , a blessing ceremony The Blessing Ceremony of the Unification Church is considered the most important and central ceremony in a person’s spiritual life. Royal Caribbean's Far East vacations have been structured to fall within the customary two-week vacation window of most travelers. However, further exploration of the Far East is possible through Royal Caribbean's wide variety of multi-day land packages, known as Cruise Combos, which can be combined with any of the five cruise itineraries to create an extended vacation of three weeks or longer.

As Royal Caribbean has done successfully in Europe, the ship remains in port for an evening or more in several embarkation and debarkation cities allowing passengers the opportunity to explore the area in depth. Vacations which begin or end in China feature three nights ashore at the luxury hotel in Beijing before or after the cruise portion with hotel accommodations, meals and sightseeing included in the total vacation price.

Though the onboard product is consistent with the high standards passengers have come to expect from Royal Caribbean, several enhancements acknowledge Sun Viking's exotic itineraries.

Onboard menus, entertainment and enrichment programs reflect the cultural influence of the Far East through local specialty dishes, theme nights, native entertainers in many ports of call and relevant historical and cultural lecture series.

In its inaugural year in Asia, Sun Viking offers five itineraries: 14-night "Jewels of Southeast Asia" cruises round trip from Singapore, 14-night "Rubies of the Far East" voyages between Singapore and Hong Kong, 13-night "Jade of China" vacations between Hong Kong and Beijing, 14-night "Pearls of China" vacations between Hong Kong and Beijing and 14-night "Gems of the Orient" vacations between Beijing and Tokyo.
