The company was founded with the help of Lincoln Kirstein, and was populated by students of Kirstein and Balanchine's School of American Ballet. dancer and international teacher Roy Tobias died at the age of 78 in August. Since the 1980s he was living in South Korea, where he had worked with the Korean National Ballet Company, Universal Ballet, and Seoul Ballet Theater. Born in Philadelphia and trained with Catherine Littlefield, Tobias joined Ballet Theatre at 16. Prior to joining the New York City Ballet New York City Ballet, one of the foremost American dance companies of the 20th cent. It was founded by Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine as the Ballet Society in 1946. , he performed in Broadway musicals, in Paris with the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas, and with Ballet Society, NYCB's predecessor. A soloist for NYCB NYCB New York City Ballet NYCB New York Community Bank from 1950-1960, Tobias created roles in Balanchine's Agon, The Nutcracker, and Divertimento divertimento Eighteenth-century chamber music genre consisting of several movements, often of a light and entertaining nature, for strings, winds, or both.
