In a partnership with the City of Round Rock, The Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and La Frontera (a 328-acre mixed use commercial development), painting of the Internet address www.round-rock.net on a new City water tower at FM 1325 at IH-35, adjacent to La Frontera, in the heart of the Round Rock high-tech office and commerce area was recently completed.

The logo, coupled with a permanent Web site by the same address, features links to many of Round Rock's most prominent Web addresses including that of the City of Round Rock, the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce, Round Rock Independent School District, La Frontera, Dell Computers, TXU Electric & Gas and TXU Communications. The water tower logo demonstrates Round Rock's tremendous community pride in the high-tech segment of the economy and will promote the city as a viable, exciting and up-to-date high-tech business destination.

In addition to the Web site, a 24-hour, seven days-a-week set of live Web cameras have been mounted to the tower with a live image feed available on the Web site. The Web cameras (affectionately dubbed the "water tower cam") show the entire southern Round Rock area and some of the current major construction activity, road construction, area office and retail construction, and instantaneous weather conditions.

"As far as we know, it is the first use of such an Internet URL address to be used on a city-owned water tower in lieu of the traditional city name usually painted on water towers throughout the country," said Bill Smalling, managing partner with La Frontera.

The www.round-rock.net idea was conceived and paid for by the developers of La Frontera and TXU Communications developed the Web site. TXU Communications is providing the high-speed digital network and fiber ring on the La Frontera site as an enticement to attract e-commerce businesses to Round Rock. TXU Communications recently chose La Frontera for the location of their regional Central Office and digital switch technology.

The water tower logo was painted by Aoudad Services Inc., from La Porte, Texas. The project took approximately four weeks to complete due to high winds and inclement weather.

The actual Web site ownership will eventually be transferred to the Round Rock Chamber of Commerce and administered by TXU Communications. Other Round Rock businesses with Web sites will also be able to link to this overall community site.

"Round Rock is already known as the `Quality of Life Capital of Texas' and is also gaining a strong reputation in the high-tech and e-commerce industry as a city with a can-do attitude." Round Rock is also home to Dell Computer Corporation's world headquarters. Dell is the largest personal computer manufacturer in the United States.

The water tower camera configuration is sponsored by Baker-Aicklen Engineers of Austin and Round Rock and was installed by Allsafe Security of Round Rock. "Not only is this a way for prospective businesses to monitor the progress and development of this important e-commerce center in Round Rock, but it also allows anyone to check in on our community progress and to even see the weather conditions at any given moment," explained Bill Waeltz, division manager of the Round Rock office for Baker-Aicklen.
