Ross: City must pave way for going green.

COLUMN: CAMPAIGN NOTEBOOK

WORCESTER - Grace C. Ross, seeking an at-large seat on the City Council, has proposed a number of strategies to encourage conserving energy, reducing pollution and improving the environment.

At a recent press conference, the candidate said the steps she outlined can be accomplished if the "next city leadership focuses on engaging residents of the city instead of living inside City Hall." The "bully pulpit bully pulpit

of elected office," Ms. Ross added, should encourage residents to take steps to take action; to move in a matter.

Steps outlined by the council candidate included:

Making it easier to obtain recycling bins and telling people how to use them.

Reducing lead and other toxins in the soil by ensuring residents know where to turn for help with their lawns and gardens. "There are great local projects available to work with residents to address these problems," Ms. Ross said.

Encouraging residents to buy backflow backflow /back·flow/ (-flo) reflux or regurgitation (1).

pyelovenous backflow  drainage from the renal pelvis into the venous system occurring under certain conditions of back pressure.
valves to deal with flash flooding and pushing the use of "blue rain water barrels," which help flood control, lower sewer bills and provide free water for yards.

Upgrading city water treatment facilities to deal with phosphates and other pollutants pollutants

may again double residents' water and sewer bills, she noted. "We should be doing everything we can do to avoid this by making the water that enters our treatment plant cleaner" through encouraging the use of detergent detergent (dētûr`jənt, dĭ–), substance that aids in the removal of dirt. Detergents act mainly on the oily films that trap dirt particles.  with no phosphate. In addition, Ms. Ross said, the city itself should use less-toxic lawn treatments.

Plant more trees in the city.

Encourage businesses and residents to bulk-buy electricity and ultimately create municipal utility.

Develop a master plan for the city focusing on ways to control the cost of living, improve the quality of life, and improve our energy and environmental future.

Follow the lead of colleges in the city by focusing on alternative energy uses.
