Previously ('67-'86) reporter at Champaign, III., Courier; then political writer, assistant editor, managing editor with column and editorial writing roles at Chicago suburban weeklies; then copy editor and city editor at mid-sized dailies including Pine Bluff, Ark., late '70s; Carbondale, III.; and Kingsport, Tenn., mid-'80s. Realized I was teaching a lot as part of the job, especially with green young recent grads. I've taught Roosevelt's opinion-writing course about once a year since 1990, and have had gracious response in very limited contacts with the editorial page folk at the Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Herald and Daily Southtown.
