Career history: Teaching at Roosevelt since 1989, at Miami of Ohio '88, and as graduate assistant at Ohio State '86-'87. Previously ('67-'86) reporter at Champaign, III., Courier; then political writer, assistant editor, managing editor with column and editorial writing roles at Chicago suburban weeklies; then copy editor and city editor at mid-sized dailies including Pine Bluff, Ark., late '70s; Carbondale, III.; and Kingsport, Tenn., mid-'80s. Realized I was teaching a lot as part of the job, especially with green young recent grads. I've taught Roosevelt's opinion-writing course about once a year since 1990, and have had gracious response in very limited contacts with the editorial page folk at the Tribune, Sun-Times, Daily Herald and Daily Southtown.

Recent news: The School of Communication recently opened spiffy spiffy - /spi'fee/ 1. Said of programs having a pretty, clever, or exceptionally well-designed interface. "Have you seen the spiffy X version of empire yet?" This was common mainstream slang during the 1940s.

new digs at 18 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago, four blocks from the university's historic home and current headquarters -- and 25 miles from my office in the suburban campus we opened in 1996.

Personal news: I'm getting back in gear professionally after losing my wife to lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell.  in 1999 and drifting away from editorship of Chicago Journalist, the SPJ SPJ Society of Professional Journalists

Best thing about job: Seeing students grasp the importance of real journalism as a benefit of the First Amendment, and start raising the quality of their inquiries and writing.

Worst thing about job: The time swallowed up by institutional duties on two campuses and by computer gearhead

First impression of NCEW NCEW National Conference of Editorial Writers : Positive but remote, in the early '80s. I wish I'd joined then. I've been on the listserv since summer 2000 and am quite impressed with the sorts of things I've been seeing.
